Study Visit "Migration - Big Picture" in Turkey

This study visit was directed on the overall topic of migration in all of the countries represented in this project. The main focus was to learn about the case studies done in Turkey (since this was the project country) and also share all of our own experiences and situations in our countries. In this project, 9 countries were represented. After getting to know each other, all the participants shared the situations in their countries related to migrants and refugees. This was extremely informing for us, because it was great to get more knowledge on the topic.

We also had a chance to explore the beautiful city of Diyarbakir, which is the unofficial Kurdish capital. We experienced the rich culture through food, music and dances. One of the main parts of this project was to hear about the local activities that help migrants and refugees in that area. We had a visit from Professor Hasan Icen, who helped us learn a lot about the refugee situation in Diyarbakir, but also in Turkey in general.

The meeting was really eye-opening, since here in Estonia we do not even realize the actual amount of refugees going through Turkey. The second part of this study visit was to visit the local NGOs helping the refugee and migrant community with different issues. The first visit was to Kamer Vakfi - NGO helping women (fighting for women’s rights and giving a helping hand in case of violence). The main vision of Kamer foundation is to create a participating society free from all forms of discrimination, violence and structural hierarchy, that would develop freely, composed of independent individuals, based on sharing and solidarity.

Our second visit was to Lotus - a children defence NGO. This organisation provides mostly non-formal techniques to provide the children an outlet. They use ways like art, theatre and music to make the kids come out of their shell and feel free to express their fears and dreams to others. The different projects conducted by this organisation give them opportunities to meet and get to know children with other backgrounds and make friends through their similarities.

Overall this study visit gave all of us a really good look into the refugee situation in different countries. For the Estonian participants, who have had experiences with training courses before, this was definitely one of the most informative ones. We had a great time in Diyarbakir in this project and cannot wait for a similar project to happen again.
